Start with what it must cover

Measure the vehicles, the walkway or the seating area, then add clearance. A carport that just fits a saloon car becomes useless when a pickup arrives. Height matters too - allow for roof racks and for rain blowing in at the sides.

Span and section size

Longer spans mean fewer posts in your way but heavier sections. We size steel to the span and expected wind and rain load rather than to habit, which is usually the difference between a structure that flexes and one that stands still.

Roofing choices

Pre-painted steel sheet - durable, quiet enough, wide colour choice.
Translucent panels - useful where you still want daylight underneath.
Solid steel roof with gutter - best where runoff has to be directed away from a doorway.

Foundations and fixing

Base plates bolted to a properly sized concrete pad, or posts cast in, depending on ground conditions and whether the structure may be moved later. This is where cheap installations fail first.
